Do they really smoke?

No. It's just an optical illusion. Steam rising from the exhaust vent of the building in the background appears to be rising from one of our Brown Street smoke stacks!

This photo shows the west end of the Brown Street Project prior to installing our smokestack stanchions. Concrete pads are in place, as well as steel posts to which our smokestacks will be secured.

Here's the view of Brown Street from the east end. Two more support posts are in place - ready for the smokestacks that have been fabricated as the base of the Brown Street Archways.

The support posts have to be made longer. Mascal and Adam contemplate a fairly simple job to weld an extension onto the post.

It's a two-man job to lift the steel extension into place.

Here, the steel extension is being carefully maneuvered precisely into place.

And once in place, it has to be secured so it won't move when it's welded.

Large C-clamps ought to do the trick until a solid bead can be welded all the way around the seam.

Back at the west end of the project, the crane has arrived.

One side has been lifted from the trailer and lowered into place.

Now we're ready to place one of the stanchions on the other side of the street.

The Channel 4 News crew arrived in time to film the action for the evening news. Ben describes the project and provides some background.

Now we have both stanchions in place on the west end of the project.

Allyn and Mascal work to secure the top of the smokestack to the top of the steel support beam.

The fit is perfect. Allyn is heard to mutter "Don't you love to see a plan come together?"

We've moved the crane to the east end of the project, where another stanchion is lowered perfectly into place.

After ensuring that the fit is exact, Adam releases the tether from another smokestack.

This is starting to feel too easy. Can a such a complex project go off without a hitch?

The last of our stanchions is raised upright on the trailer.

We're ready to finish the job and lift the final stanchion into place.

Here's the new view of the east end of the project. Both of our smokestacks are in place and are being secured by Adam and Mascal.

With the stanchions in place, it's time to pose for some photos. Here's Mascal looking proud of the job.
